The National Museum of Visual Arts (MNAV) and the Figari Museum, both dependent on the National Directorate of Culture of the MEC, together with the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) organize the shows "Pedro Figari: African nostalgia".
The exhibition was exhibited at the MASP from December 14, 2018 to February 10, 2019 and in this instance will be presented at the National Museum of Visual Arts (MNAV) from March 21 to May 26, 2019.
The show refers to the title of one of his paintings and includes a profusion of everyday scenes, giving dignity and complexity to the Afro-Uruguayan community.
The exhibition has more than fifty works from public and private collections in Uruguay and Brazil and will be accompanied by an illustrated catalog with reproductions of all the exhibited works and seven unpublished texts by curators Pablo Thiago Rocca, director of the Figari Museum and Mariana Leme, MASP assistant curator, as well as invited experts: Patricia M. Artundo, historian Of art; Yamandú Acosta, philosopher; Olga Picún, musicologist and anthropologist; Jean-Arsène Yao, historian; and a biographical note by researcher Camila Ruskowski.
The catalog will be published in three versions: Portuguese, English and Spanish.
The exhibition is organized by MASP, São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand Art Museum, in association with the National Museum of Visual Arts and the Figari Museum.
On the opening day the candombe show: «Together for Pedro Figari», within the framework of the ten years since the declaration of Tango and Candombe as intangible cultural heritage. Organized by: Interministerial Commission for Support to Tango and Candombe.
The sample will remain open until Sunday, May 26, 2019.
