Quicksilver SP-281 - History

Quicksilver

(SP-281: 1. 50'8"; b. 10'; dr. 1'7"; s. 22 k.; a. 2 1 pdr.)

Quicksilver (SP-281) was built by Jahneke Navigation Co. New Orleans, La., for Ernest Lee Jahneke and was delivered under charter to the Navy 24 May 1917.

She operated out of New Orleans on section patrol at the beginning of World War I. On 1 October 1918 she was ordered to Pensacola Naval Air Station, Pensaeola, Fla., where she was sorely needed in connection with training flights over Florida Bay. Quick.sil~er continued in this duty until 27 November 1918 when she returned to New Orleans.

Quicksilver decommissioned at New Orleans 28 January 1919; was struck from the Navy Register 17 May 1919; and was sold 30 June 1919 to George Plant, Washington, D.C.

Early Devonian biogeography has been based primarily on articulate brachiopods, rugose corals and trilobites. Study of gastropod literature and unpublished collections confirms previously utilized biogeographic units based on other taxa: the Eastern Americas Realm the Malvinokaffric Realm and the Old World Realm.

Spiny platyceratids, Strophostylus and Crossoceras are restricted to the Eastern Americas Realm which can be informally divided into three paleoclimatic regimes: Hudson Bay Platform — Michigan Basin (tropical to subtropical with abundant evaporites and oolites), Appalachian Basin (subtropical to warm temperate), and the Amazon-Colombian area (moderate to cool temperate with limited to no carbonates).

Overall gastropod taxic diversity is highest in Old World Realm faunas, which include more highly ornamented forms such as the oriostomataceans and salpingostomatids, and the genera Kodymites and Euomphalopterus found in Arctic and western North America (Alaska, British Columbia, Yukon and Northwest Territories), Bohemia, and southeastern Australia.

Nevada gastropods confirm the shifting biogeographic boundaries recognized previously by other faunal groups. In Lochkovian time this area was part of the Old World Realm. During Pragian-early Emsian time Nevada contained typical Appalachian gastropod genera (Nevadan Subprovince of Eastern Americas Realm). Later in the Emsian (Eurekaspirifer pinyonensis Zone) mixing occurred with elements of both realms co-occurring. By Eifelian time the gastropods were wholly of Old World Realm character.

The Malvinokaffric Realm fauna of southern and central South America, Falkland Islands and Antarctica is strongly depauperate, with only four superfamilies represented from the seventeen then extant. Characteristic genera are Plectonotus (Plectonotus) and large species of Tropidodiscus.

The reduction in taxonomic diversity from the Old World Realm to the Eastern Americas Realm to the Malvinokaffric Realm is consistent with an interpreted change from warm tropical to warm temperate to the cooler water environment of high paleolatitudes of the southern hemisphere. The distribution of Old World Realm faunas, as well as calcareous algae and oolites favor paleogeographic reconstructions with the Early Devonian equator passing through Alaska and the Canadian Arctic Islands.

Quicksilver is a style granting the power to slow down time at the cost of Devil Trigger. Dante will snap his fingers and say "Stand Still!" as the world's colors are inverted, activating Time Lag. During the snap animation, Dante is granted invincibility frames no matter if he is on the ground or air. While active, everything except Dante moves at a fraction of normal speed, allowing Dante to set up and perform combos not normally possible. It can be used in conjunction with Devil Trigger but will drain the gauge faster.

Using the "Super Legendary Dark Knight" costume allows Quicksilver to be used for an infinite amount of time. In the original release of Devil May Cry 3, the "Super Dante" costume would also allow such a thing, but this was changed in the Special Edition and in turn in the HD Collection as well.

Quicksilver

Pietro and Wanda Maximoff were born at the mountain Wundergore, where the hideout of the High Evolutionary was located. They were abducted by the High Evolutionary as children and experimented on, giving them mutant powers, and returned to their parents when the High Evolutionary was unhappy with the experiment's results. When the twins' father tried to steal food to feed his poor family, the villagers decided to attack the Maximoffs, but Pietro and Wanda managed to flee with Pietro's mutant power of super speed. After living off the land for years, Wanda accidentally burned down a house using her powers and was branded a witch. But before she could be executed, the mutant Magneto rescued her and Pietro. Magneto decided to have the siblings join his group, the Brotherhood of Mutants, and named them Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. As a member of the Brotherhood, Quicksilver assisted Magneto in his terrorist acts against humanity, until Magneto was defeated by the alien called the Stranger. This led to Quicksilver and his sister fleeing from the Brotherhood and seeking shelter with the Avengers, eventually joining the ground and becoming superheroes.

Television

Quicksilver features in the Captain America segment of The Marvel Superheroes (1966) X-Men: The Animated Series voiced by Paul Haddad (1992 - 1997) X-Men: Evolution voiced by Richard Ian Cox (2000 - 2003) Wolverine and the X-Men voiced by Mark Hildreth (2008 - 2009) and The Super Hero Squad Show voiced by Scott Menville (2009).

Film

In X2: X-Men United, the name "Maximoff" appears on a computer screen in a list of mutant names.

He can also be seen briefly in the new movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He is seen tied to numerous prison bars vibrating rapidly in an attempt to escape.

In X-Men: Days of Future Past, he appears for a "one-beat" to break Magneto out of the Pentagon. Notably, he goes by the name Peter instead of Pietro, and though the film does not elaborate on this, writer Simon Kinberg is quoted as saying in an Empire Magazine podcast that "When we meet him in the film, he’s living in the U.S. suburbs. We thought a real teen kid would go by Peter."

In X-Men: Apocalypse, Peter takes a more important role in the story. After the death of Magneto's family and his subsequent reappearance, Peter goes to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters looking for him, but finds the house about to explode due to Alex Summers' attempt to stop Apocalypse and his Horsemen from taking Xavier prisoner. He uses his speed to save everyone in the house, but arrived too late to save Alex from the heat of the explosion. He is then taken captive by Colonel Stryker, but escapes with the others to confront Apocalypse. He nearly reveals to Erik that he is his son, but hesitates. He is the only one to do any damage to Apocalypse before Jean Grey's intervention, catching him off guard with his speed. However, Apocalypse is able to speed himself up, catching Peter's leg and breaking it. He is seen in a cast and on crutches outside of the X-Mansion at the end of the film, telling Storm that he will tell Erik the truth "one day," but for now, will be remaining with the X-Men. He is seen beginning training against the Sentinels with the others - Scott, Jean, Ororo, and Kurt - in the last scene.

In Dark Phoenix, Peter travels to space with the X-Men to rescue the crew of the space shuttle Endeavour from a "solar flare." He uses his superspeed to unbuckle all of the astronauts from their seats and pull them back to Kurt, allowing the teleporter to take them back to the X-Jet. Later, he attempts to subdue an overwhelmed and out-of-control Jean, but she is able to perceive him at his speed, using her telekinesis to throw him against a wall. He is seen injured, but has recovered by the final scene, in which he tells a student to stop running in the halls, citing "safety first."

Quicksilver

Biodegradability

In its invisible state, Quicksilver is a semi-solid, flexible sheath, and if it is in contact with subject Fawkes (or another individual with a Quicksilver Gland) it will persist until it is acted upon by the beta reagent inhibitor. When separated from the subject - i.e., if applied to a separate object that is left unattended - the Quicksilver compound will eventually autoxidate and change states to its solid, crystalline form.

After autoxidation, or after being acted upon by the beta reagent inhibitor, Quicksilver converts to a dry crystalline form that is extremely brittle and is repelled by natural oils in human skin and hair.

Once converted to this form, crystalline Quicksilver degrades rapidly into powder, and then into its constituent amino base pairs, within approximately 72 hours.

Quicksilver Madness

Earlier Quicksilve Gland prototypes (the QS-9000, QS-9100 and QS-9200) all presented side effects directly related to either the failure to maintain invisibility, or an inability to terminate invisibility. The latter of these issues persisted into the first human trial of the QS-9300 with subject Cole.

Following the second human trial with subject Fawkes, a new side effect was discovered. A new stabilizing compound (formulation (classified) ) used in the alpha reagent acted upon the brain as behavioral disinhibitor, displaying certain chemical similarities to Schedule I narcotics. An excess of Quicksilver in brain tissue spikes the subject's epinephrine/norepinephrine levels, promoting violent behavior and causing higher cortical functions to degrade, impairing judgment and suppressing the superego. This buildup begins after approximately 30 minutes of Quicksilver use, or six days of passive glandular secretion. Shorter periods of Quicksilver usage reduce the length of the buildup cycle.

It was learned shortly after the onset of symptoms that Dr. Arnaud De Thiel was actually a terrorist named Arnaud de Fehrn. De Thiel deliberately created the side effect, which has been dubbed "Quicksilver Madness," as a means of controlling individuals who are given the Quicksilver Gland. He planned to maintain control over the subjects by rationing the supply of a counteragent drug that negates the effects of Quicksilver Madness.

Subject Fawkes' level of quicksilver toxin is now monitored daily through the use of a circular tattoo of an ouroboros divided into segments. Each segment of the tattoo contains a subcutaneous sensor that changes color from green to red when serum levels of the toxin reach predetermined volumes of parts per million. Each successive segment is keyed to respond to a higher level of toxin than the previous segment. Regular injections of Quicksilver Counteragent are administered when the tattoo reaches 70 percent red.

Stage one Quicksilver Madness is marked by an increase in body temperature and general irritability.

As body temperature increases to 100.1 degrees Fahrenheit, stage two Quicksilver Madness occurs. During stage two, the body's autonomic response will be to cause vasodilatation in an effort to cool itself. Other symptoms of stage two include sharp pain similar to migraine headaches, and petit mal convulsions, both of which are likely the result of synaptic disruption in the frontal lobe caused by the (classified) in the alpha reagent. The effects of the vasodilatation are most visible in the ocular capillaries. (In layman's terms, the subject's eyes become bloodshot.)

Stage three Quicksilver Madness is typified by violent paranoia and delusions of persecution. During stage four Quicksilver Madness the subject loses all inhibitions against moral behavior, and exhibits self-destructive tendencies.

Stage 5 Quicksilver Madness

During stage five Quicksilver Madness (the final stage) the subject's eyes turn from bloodshot to solid silver as Quicksilver compound is involuntarily excreted from the tear ducts. The subject becomes megalomaniacal, convinced of his own invulnerability and infallibility. Theoretical models indicate that if stage five Quicksilver Madness is not reversed within approximately 12 hours, it will become irreversible. The approved protocols for such a scenario is the immediate termination and retrieval of the subject, followed by the harvesting of the QS-9300.

Counteragent Efficacy

A standard dosage of (classified) c.c.s. of Quicksilver Counteragent (an organically based compound containing 57 active ingredients whose full chemical structure have not yet been fully decoded) is effective at suppressing the effects of Quicksilver Madness for up to six days, provided the subject's usage of Quicksilver is minimal. An increase in the use of Quicksilver by the subject dramatically increases the risk of a rapid onset of Quicksilver Madness, and requires the subject to receive more frequent applications of counteragent formula.

The approved dosage of counteragent is intended to remain fixed, in order to reduce the risk of the subject building up a physiological resistance.

Counteragent Resistance

Early tests of the new alpha reagent formula and its counteragent on lab rats indicate that overuse of Quicksilver Counteragent can cause the subject to buildup resistance, thereby increasing minimum effective dosage to negate effects of Quicksilver Madness. If minimum dosage exceeds (classified) c.c.s., the subject will effectively become immune to counteragent. At that time, the onset of end stage Quicksilver Madness will be inevitable, and the recommended course of action is immediate termination of the subject.

The History of Quiksilver

Nicky Kelly

In an era that bred creativity, lies the foundation of a global giant of the surf world: Quiksilver. In 1969 an Australian wetsuit maker by the name of Alan Green had an idea for boardshorts for surfers. In his base of Torquay-Victoria, Australia he made some, brought his friends on board to help, sold some of the shorts, and overnight had found out that surfers liked boardshorts. And so Quiksilver was born.

Quiksilver is now synonymous with not only surfing, but specifically boardsport youth fashion. It is one of the most successful multi-national surf companies in the world, and has managed to grow from strength to strength over 4 decades, taking a massive $2.2 billion in net revenues in 2008 alone. So what is its secret?

Since its inception in the 1970s Quiksilver has been extremely forward thinking. What does this mean? Well think &ldquooutside the box&rdquo. Quiksilver has made a point over the years of diversifying, expanding, whilst prioritizing core values. The company has obtained a large number of smaller organisations in the boardsport and water sport industries, such as DC Shoes, Hawk, Raisins, Radio Fiji and Leilani. Quiksilver has made sure that it has always been an attractive business model from the beginning. It was one of the first surf companies to go public and to appear on the New York Stock Exchange in 1986.

Yet what has it meant for surfers and boardriders? Quiksilver now sponsors around 500 professional and amateur boardriders, including the iconic surfer and 9x world champion Kelly Slater, the infamous skater Tony Hawk, and even singer/songwriter/surfer Jack Johnson back in 1987. The company has had a huge part in the development of numerous surfers, skaters, snowboarders and athletes around the globe. Even the creation of the women's brand Roxy has helped move surfing forward.

Roxy was created in 1990 when the surfer industry and its fashion was very male dominated. The establishment of the all girl surf fashion company helped to push the industry to new places, and of course- encourage girls everywhere to dream of, if not actually take up, surfing and snowboarding.

Today Quiksilver has over 600 stores worldwide, sells surfwear, boardsports equipment, accessories and apparel. Furthermore, the company sponsors the very special Eddie Aikau Big Wave International and hosts 2 of the ASPs world contest, the Gold Coast Pro and the Pro France. The company continues to expand with the use of clever marketing campaigns, which seek to ask the public for &ldquopermission&rdquo for it to grow bigger. Whilst on the more understated side, the company has set up the charitable organisation The Quiksilver Foundation. The organisation works with boardriding communities to help improve health, education, the environment and youth projects in that area.

Quiksilver is one of the biggest sponsors on the ASP tour. Its biggest European event is the Quiksilver pro which takes place in September in Hossegor, one of the destinations we offer for Surfiing Holidays in France

Quiksilver has managed to navigate with creativity some pretty competitive waters over the last few decades. It will be good to see what the company fashions over the coming years and where it can help the board sports progress to next. In the meantime, take a look at this classic 80s advert. genius.
